As we journey into the new year, many people are erasing the stigma surrounding mental health, and one local woman is changing people’s view of mental health issues through artwork.
Kimmy Henderson, the creator of the Bipolar Butterfly Project joined us in studio to talk about how the project got started as well as how art can be therapeutic for people going through their own struggles.
Kimmy discussed how there has been lots of discussion about mental health and how important it is to see it at the forefront of people’s minds.
Henderson discussed the symbolism and importance of the butterfly and what it means for growth and change.
“During my first manic episode, I painted a butterfly, and the butterfly represents change and metamorphosis, and self-growth” she said.
“I painted the one side was dripping away to show on one side we want to show our best selves though we might be crumbling on the other.”
She shared the work with some of her other Makikisart followers, and the response was overwhelming as people began to see what the project was all about.
Kimmy has been featured on Fox8, and various other outlets and platforms for her work in creating and developing the Bipolar Butterfly Project.
