Akron held the annual All American Soap Box Derby this weekend at Derby Downs–a 90 year tradition that brings in visitors and racers from all over the country and even the world to test their speed, steering, and skills. Many have been racing for years to the point where the Soap Box Derby has become a big part of their lives and an exciting summer event. With three different races, the stock, super stock, and masters, kids and young adults up to age twenty can compete in what has become one of the most important traditions in Akron. For some families, it’s even a tradition passed down from child to child. Sunshine and warm temperatures paired well with the event, with dozens of heats happening throughout the day. Vendors lined the track and spectators clung to the fences to watch the motorless cars speed down the raceway as the Goodyear blimp flew overhead. While the spirit of competition hung in the air, the overarching theme of the day was just as clear as the skies above–the All Amercian Soap Box Derby is about tradition, fun, and most importantly, family–and that’s the prize all racers will get to take home.
